There is something for everyone to celebrate on Valentine’s Day, and gardeners are no exception. We love our plants and when we get some for Valentine’s Day we are over the moon!
So what would be a special plant for a gardener on this most auspicious date? Well, let’s get started on the list, so that you have ample time to make the best choices for your favourite green thumb.
I would start with plants that have those unmistakable heart shaped leaves! After all what says love more than hearts falling all over the place?
Here are some of my favorites and I’m sure they will be welcomed by any gardener I know.
-
Philodendrons, come in all shapes and sizes from small vines, to larger leafed varieties. The one common element is their overall heart shaped leaves. Some with white veining and others with red, some with split leaves and some without.
-
African Violets for a smaller plant, also with heart shaped leaves and treated right, they will blossom as well. They come in shades of pink, purple, white, red, some are bicolored, and some have frilly flowers, and others have just plain flowers. Either way they are beautiful and will be appreciated. Inexpensive as well so buy more than one if your budget allows.
-
One of my absolute favorites is Coleus. There are so many varieties of this plant and all of them are beautiful. Some come in two or three colors while others will be green only, yet they are all beautiful. They can have serrated leaves which makes them very exotic looking. If they are watered and given sunlight, they will thrive. When spring comes your gardener friend will be taking cuttings to put in the garden outdoors. So a gift that will last throughout the year.
-
Kalachoe, is another plant that has beautiful leaves and flowers that range in a variety of colors from white, pink, orange, and red. They like bright light and a thorough watering, but don’t overwater. Beauties and appreciated for sure.
-
Prayer Plant is another beauty. It has leaves that are heart shaped and veined with contrasting colors. It’s a bit of a “funny” plant in that through the day it’s leaves are flat and in the evening they fold up like they are praying, hence the name. No one would say “no” to this beauty.
Now all you need to do is add a lovely planter or decorative pot and you are all set. I bet your Valentine will be amazed at your thoughtfulness and zero calorie choice for a lovely and very different Valentine’s Gift!
