Dressing for Success on the First Day of Kindergarten may sound trivial, but it’s NOT!

That all important first day of school when your little ones all of a sudden look so grown up,(when really they are still just babies), and they are taking those first important steps away from you and on their way to independence.  Well, maybe I’m just being a little dramatic, but you get where I’m going.

Children learn in fits and starts and that first day of school is an important one.  One that you want to start on the best possible note.

You may not think clothing is important, but it is!

Our first impressions are often based on what we see. Whether this is a true judgement will come to light in days and weeks and months to come, but let’s face it, if our children go to school that first day looking like they had just come off the bus from summer camp, the teacher, fellow students and their parents are going to wonder about you and your child.  That first week kids are sizing each other up and so are the parents.  If your child is always showing up with clothes that are unkempt, too small or too big, there will be opinions made.  Now I’m not suggesting that clothes are the most important things, but in those first few days, they are one of the cornerstones on which many interactions between peers will happen.  There will be many a discussion about someone’s neat t-shirt or blouse.  Girls will like each other’s dresses and skirts, it’s a way for kids to open discussions with new friends.

I’ve always thought that what a child wears is a reflection of their parents. Everyone should try to dress as nice as possible, whether a child or adult.

Yes Mary, it is a reflection of what is happening at home. Sometimes that can be something less than perfect. But that first impression on day one sort of lingers until the child has a chance to prove himself. It’s sad that it has to be that way, but it still is.
